Although David is best known for his work in glass and neon, he also has deep roots in the tradition of wood sculpture. David has worked at Alaska Indian Arts where he teaches woodcarving techniques of the Tlingit Indian tradition. He also has an interest in the classic form of kokeshi dolls of Japan, but made his first kokeshi out of glass, using glass blowing techniques that echo the wood lathe work of traditional kokeshi artisans.
Kazumi Kobayashi Svenson is from Sendai, Japan and shares David’s love for kokeshi. Kazumi, a neon artist and teacher of glass blowing, collaborated with David to design and produce these examples of “Electric Kokeshi”.
Kazumi’s two other works titled “Ranhu” (category of gold fish) and “Tancho” (White body and red head) express her interest in water life.
Both artists are involved with the Museum of Neon Art in downtown LA and show their work on occasion as well as teach classes in neon design.

The Long Beach Redevelopment Agency is proud to partner with Phantom Galleries LA, not only to revive empty storefronts along our major corridors, but also to showcase the arts and build a sense of community and culture in our Downtown," said Craig Beck, Executive Director of the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency.
